Scientifically, myths are a trick of the brain in order to form increasingly large communities. This eventually leads to national state myths. Our nations are not much different from ant colonies, with clear rules of where to march, and when. Ant trails are based upon chemical communication through smell.
Our brain works in a similar way, by chemical communication of synapses, but is infinitely more complex. This is simplified by linguistic communication of the narrative into stories, which are passed on from grandparents to grandchildren, singers to communities, and experts to nations. The stories evolve and transform from generation to generation. In the best case they reflect the sociobiological environment of the community. In the worst case the people are being convinced of a lie with harmful consequences.
